How to find your personal style: a guide to discovering your unique style

There’s a huge difference between fashion and style.

a style that is popular at a particular time, especially in clothes, hair, make-up, etc.

While style is:

a way of doing something, especially one that is typical of a person, group of people, place, or period.

So, fashion is made up of lots of different styles that are unique to each individual, as well as groups of people.

Fashion is ever-changing, especially today. It can feel quite overwhelming to keep up with all of the trends that are constantly coming and going, which is why it’s so important to find your own unique style.

Don’t worry — we’re going to help you work out your personal style, so that putting together a fabulous outfit can be as easy and effortless as the most stylish of women.

8 tips to finding your style

We’ve pulled together a guide to help you understand your unique style. This will help you when you’re shopping to know what will work best in your wardrobe and what you can go without.

Start with your wardrobe

First thing’s first, we need to do a detox of your wardrobe. We don’t want anything in there that you’re never going to wear again.

Is there anything you have that makes you feel a bit meh when you try it on? You don’t need it in your life!

We’re not telling you to get rid of the things you like but rarely get around to wearing. You never know when you’ll get a chance to show it off!

We’re talking about the stuff that you never wear because it doesn’t make you feel good.

Once you’ve pulled those items out of your wardrobe, take them to the charity shop, sell them, or recycle them. Someone else can make much better use of them.

Learn about your body shape

Do you know what your body shape is?

Knowing your body shape can help you to know which clothing styles automatically work for your shape.

For instance, we know that bardot tops work beautifully on pear-shaped bodies, so that’s a style to keep your eyes out for!

Once you’ve made an account, the body shape quiz will pop up. It then shows you the body shapes of all the other users on there, so that when you’re reading a clothing review, you know what their body shape is! You can pay more attention to the reviews that share your body shape.

Take this with a pinch of salt. Anyone can wear any type of clothes that they like. It’s just an easy hack to help you find clothes quicker and easier if you’ve struggled up until now.

Find your signature pieces

Now that you know your body shape, you can research the pieces that will work best for you — just like how the bardot works wonderfully for pear-shaped people.

This is the fun part. It’s your excuse to go shopping!

Try on lots of different styles of clothes, e.g. halter neck tops, sleeveless tops, bodycon dresses, slip skirts, baggy jeans, skinny jeans, etc.

Take note of what works and what seems to not work.

Sometimes it may just be the piece itself. Other times, it may be the style of clothing that’s not working.

Over time, you’ll start to learn what looks incredible on you and what shapes you should stick to — or avoid — when shopping for new clothes.

Be ready to experiment with your style

When you’re shopping around, don’t be afraid to move outside of your comfort zone — that’s where we grow!

You’ll never know if you don’t try, so don’t write off certain styles and items until you’ve given them a chance.

Pick up pieces that you like and try them on! If you love them, you love them. It’s as simple as that.

Find your style inspirations

There are a lot of brands and clothes online.

Even when you do have a grasp on the kinds of clothes and styles you like, it can be overwhelming trying to navigate the sheer volume of it.

One way to get around that is to pick a few fashion bloggers and influencers whose style you love and get your outfit inspo from them.

Don’t follow anyone who makes you feel inadequate, lesser than, or that you need to change something about yourself.

Only follow people who make you feel inspired, uplifted, and happy within yourself!

We’d also suggest having a look on Desyr for specific items to buy. This way, you’ll know what’s worth buying and what looks good on your body shape before spending hours trawling through thousands of brands.

Find your staples

Everyone has an outfit that they wear over and over and over again. It’s just easy. You know it works.

Whenever you’re in a rush and don’t have time to make a new outfit, you can just throw on your staples and be ready to go.

This could be your favourite:

  • Pair of jeans
  • Shoes
  • Coat
  • Top
  • Dress
  • Skirt
  • Trousers
  • Etc.

When you have these staples worked out, you can build outfits around them. That way, you know you’ll look good every time!

Your new mantra ‘if in doubt, go without’

When discovering your individual style, you’ll need to be weary of trends being forced down your throat.

Just because something is trending, doesn’t mean that you need to have or wear it. Chances are it will go out of fashion within a few weeks anyway.

That doesn’t mean you can’t buy into trends. Just make sure that you truly love it and will continue to love it even when the hype dies down.

Unsure whether or not to make a purchase?

If in doubt, go without!

Only keep items of clothes that you genuinely love and make you feel good.

Embrace several styles

Styles can grow and evolve. Finding your style doesn’t mean locking yourself down into a category and never exploring new styles.

One day, you could dress ultra-feminine, the next day you could dress like a tomboy, the next, you might feel like going for business-chic.

The best thing about style is that it’s unique to you. So long as you love it, then it’s your personal style.

That’s the beauty of fashion!
